Probably my favorite thing to do when it starts to get cold outside is make myself a warm beverage. I especially enjoy it when alcohol is thrown in for a little extra kick! There’s the traditional mulled wine, but sometimes I like something that a bit sweeter and spicy.
When I came up with this drink I wanted something that was super nutty in flavor, but with a maple twist. I love almond milk and think it has a natural sweet flavor, so I decided to use that as a base and build on the almond flavour. I eyeballed the majority of the ingredients, but I would say a shot to two shots of brandy for every cup of almond milk. I would also add in ½ cup of Frangelico per 2 cups of almond milk to keep that hazelnut flavor.
For a small batch I would start with:
4 cups of almond milk
1 Tbsp of maple syrup (the real stuff is better for this drink, but it’s not essential)
½ cup of Frangelico
2 shots of brandy (any kind works, spiced rum would also taste really nice, or Fireball whiskey)
¼ tsp of cloves, cardamon, cinnamon, nutmeg. I like to use both ground and whole spices or this. I love the look of the spices in the drink after and the whole spices will make your kitchen smell amazing.
Optional add-on could be a ¼ cup of heavy cream. I originally added this to give he drink a bit more weight, but after making this a second time it’s not really necessary. I was just being a little too fancy that first time.
In a pot simmer all the ingredients together until hot. If you’d the spices to have a stronger flavor you can grate them into the almond milk, crush them, or add them whole in a mulling sack. I if you’re going to put the spices in whole, I would do this before adding in the alcohol in case it boils...gotta keep the good stuff!
Taste test along the way, some like a stronger flavor in the milk, some in the alcohol. See what fits for you!
Just remember to never let the ingredients come to a boil and sieve the liquid if you’re adding the spices in without a sack.
